This week has been very adventurous for me I would say. Yet, what is this life, but an ongoing adventure, where one should take some risks and seize new opportunities. I think this is what we are actually doing here. We discuss, share and discover different views and experiences connected with modern technological ways of TEACHING and seize the opportunity of LEARNING new things.
At the same time, this very week has been very productive as well. I have previously worked with PPT but once again I have discovered many new interactive ways of making a great presentation. Esecially I liked the various activities one could use in a PPT. I have made a PPT in grammar and I avoided using images, as I thought it is more appropriate. In my opinion, a grammar lesson focuses above all on accuracy. I tried to use my PPT as an electronic blackboard where I would explain the theoretical material by involving the students in the process.
Another importand thing is that a teacher should know the students, their personalities, in order to get to them. Very often I make examples using the names of my studetns. In this way they manage to get a better understanding of the studied material.
When it comes to large classes, I work with them only when I have theoretical courses. I am lucky to have 12 students for my practical classes. I would like to share the link of the book I found on the internet:
http://www.cambridge.org/other_files/downloads/esl/booklets/Jones-Student-Centered.pdf
The author explains everything in plain language and it is accessable for everybody.
I also liked the way other techers work with large classes. It is always interesting to discover new things and revise your own methods of teaching.

ReplyDeleteI like your idea of know your students, I try it, but I teach on large groups and sometimes it is hard to remember 180 names! (distributed in five groups) and I only see them twice a week, but I know that for a better understanding could be desirable to know them better, on large classes you manage to know their faces, and sometimes you just know the names of the best students.
Sad but true, I know their faces, but sometimes I can’t remember all my students names, I have to check my list and check the place they are seated, and voila! I check it on my list. (In the classrooms they have a list number alphabetical ordered by names)
I can’t finish my comment without telling you: ENVY YOU! Twelve students! , are they hiring at your school? I want to work there!
Just kidding, and to conclude, yes when you teach on large classes you become an expert on to improve your teaching methods, even when you end up with not voice at all !
I'll check the book you share, thanks for it.
greeting from Mexico, Vicks!
Hi, Poncho!
DeleteAfter having seen the nuber of students you teach, I must admit I envy myself :) Yet, there' s always an advantage of learning large classes, you get to know such an overwhelming variety of different opinions and characters.
However, I would say that schools should be more attentive when it comes to learning a foreign language. In my opinion classes shouls be smaller. But teachers have always to adjust to the school requirements.
